Project Process

Experience of design process & methodologies:

I have vast experience of the design process and methodologies. In each project I undertake I work through the correct design process to get the best outcome with the time possible.

 â€‹

Experience of team leadership & management:

I do not have a great deal of experience in this area so far but it is something I am keen to improve on and develope further.

Experience of costing projects & fee negotiation:

I have had some experience with this in the past as it was part of a project we did. We had to write a terms of refference and state our hourly rate for certain tasks.

Experience of planning & managing project activity:

I have got experience with this as it has been a major part of each project, Gantt charts where used regularly in the 2nd year to help manage your time

Experience of client relationships & collaboration:

Advanced research strategies has helped me build up client relationships as I have gathered a user demographic in which the product that is being designed in the FMP will be for. By doing this I gain key insight into the issues they face and what they expect from a product of its value.

Experience of a wide range of project types & scales of innovation:

A wide range of projects is shown in my product design portfolio, these range from engineered projects such as my FMP to user interaction which is shown in the Interface design brief.

Enterprise & Marketing

Experience of project procurement & client consultation:

I have experience of this from many of my projects the following are just some of them. RSA, Design for Industry

Knowledge of design sectors & creative industries:

Reading ‘ The Art of Innovation’ by IDEO has opened my mind to consultancies and other kinds of work such as in house design teams which the larger companies tend to have.

Experience in planning continuing professional development:

I have shown experience in this throughout the PDF3 module and a infographic illustration of this is the ‘Personal Review’ which was done in block one. I have continued to improve my skills via skill development.

Experience & understanding of legislation & regulations:

I have experience of regulations from doing the negotiated theory visual piece in which I drafted a set of building plans in accordance to British standards. I have also acquired copies of the British standards for technical drawings.

Experience of design budgets & account management:

I am encountering design budgets within my FMP, I am aiming to manufacture the product for under £100 to reach the £300 retail mark. Changes have had to of been made to the design to accommodate this manufacture price.

Experience of design practice marketing & promotion:

During my final major project I am encountering a new product promotion and aiming it towards a particular user demographic in which I feel that there is sufficient gap in the market for the product proposal.

Values & Vision

Awareness & practice of user centred design:

The RSA module ‘ Product Design Issues’ focused heavily on user centred design, also the FMP has focused on user centred design where the ease of use aids the user to do specific tasks.

Commitment to the advancement of design knowledge, expertise & value:

It is important to continue to improve your knowledge and expertise within design as it is a sector which is ever changing so its important to look to the future.

Awareness & appreciation of key design futures & innovation trends:

This can be done by looking around at what is being designed and what new innovations in other sectors are creeping through.

Commitment to & understanding of the imperatives of professional practice:

Professional practice is important to keep developing as it keeps you ahead of the field and aware of ever changing situations

Subscription to policies & standards of ethical design:

Policies and ethical design are important to stick too and I like to add my own values and ethics to product development, these are mentioned in the video links in the 3rd block.

Understanding & practice of ethical business standards:

It is important to understand ethical business standards so that you can conform to them and work in a harmony to achieve the optimum outcome.

Skills & Knowledge

Experience of process, component & production technology: Aptitude for designing through a digital platform:

Solidworks, Adobe photoshop and Illustrator are just some of the programmes I have acquired skills in.

Aptitude in compiling interim & summative design presentations: Visualising / prototyping skills & aptitudes in a range of media & formats:

Soft modeling is often used in the sketch/ concept generation period this can be seen within the ‘Interface Design’ module then more representative models are produced which the concept is finalised. I also have experience in 3d rapid prototyping.

Experience of design research, analysis & synthesis:

The advanced research strategies shows a great depth of knowledge into one aspect of cycling. This was a 6week module and I learnt valuable research tools by doing this. Such as user profiling, ethonography and much more.

Awareness of diverse & global range of design cultures & languages:

It is important to be aware of other design cultures and it is also important to be aware of the design culture of the market in which the product is aimed. Also it is important from a graphical point of view to acknowledge certain logos are offensive in some countries whereas they may be common place in others.
